Local Gourmands 2/28/08

Dear local foodie friends,

…or shall we say Local Gourmands, in a nod to dear Julia who would not have liked the term ‘foodie’ so much. I wanted to pass along info on two upcoming events in Brooklyn that might be of interest:

Tonight at the Community Bookstore in Park Slope Manhattan Borough President, Scott Stringer, will be talking about and signing his new book, GO GREEN EAST HARLEM COOKBOOK. The talk starts at 7:30 and should bring together a nice crowd of people. If you don’t know it already, the Community Bookstore is in Park Slope at 143 7th Ave. between Garfield and Carroll St.

On Tuesday, March 4 (we’re almost there! March starts on Saturday, and not a day too soon!), Gabrielle Langholtz, editor of Edible Brooklyn and Press Coordinator for CENYC Greenmarkets, will be hosting a local food reading at The Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo. If you’ve never been, this is a fantastic space in ruddy, old Dumbo where there is much class and creativity leaking out the cracks of the old brick factory buildings. Readers will include Phoebe Damrosch, David Wondrich, and Kara Zuaro. 7 p.m. 37 Main St., at Water St., in Dumbo.

So, last night I met up with the Brooklyn Slow Food crew and met a woman who’s working on a locavore guide, a site that will act as a database for finding local ingredients. You will be able to type in, say, “flour” and get a list of the places where you can purchase local flour (mile distance will be included on the list). The website is www.localfork.com.

Hope to see some or all of you soon, and in the mean time, stay warm!
Happy eating,
Jeanne
